Feedback November

You are making steady progress and have updated your blog with some appropriate posts.  You show an awareness of the codes and conventions of the genre.

The storyboard would benefit from some revision and maybe upload each shot with an explanation of camera direction.

Complete the script and reflect upon the representations of gender. How are they problematic and how are you going to challenge them?

You are working at level 2/3 for research and planning but can achieve level 4 if you publish all your posts as your group work is promising.

To reach level you must publish your;
  • Script
  • Storyboard
  • Maltese Falcon analysis
  • Analysis of 'Seven'

Codes and conventions of Film Noir

Codes and conventions of Film Noir

Lighting

Lighting is a major part of film noir. The lighting is usually from only one or two sources, this makes the lighting very low key. The lighting usually follows a character or enhances certain features of them, this is usually to help create the image that the character (usually a middle aged make) prefers to be in the dark and has a dark side to them. Blinds are also used inside most buildings, this again makes the lighting seem more ow key. The low key lighting throughout the films make them feel like there is something wrong and that there is danger.

Sound

The soundtrack is usually composed to match the action, this is to create a lasting atmosphere. There are also very dull and soft sounds throughout most of the movie. Voice overs are used to advance the story and are usually played with an establishing shot. Voice overs are also used to portray the characters thoughts without saying it out loud this is usually used to explain what the characters think and there feelings towards each other.

Narrative

The plot devises used in Film Noir are usually simple and straight to the point. There is an enigma that is usually brought in the by femme fatale whom i will talk about later. The enigma adds a mystery to the plot that the hero must solve. The hero will always solve the problem in the end and save the day, this reflects the time in which the genre was made popular. The mood is always very mysterious, this is created using a combination of the other codes and conventions. There is an overall depressing and confusing mood at the beginning and this then evolves slowly into a action like mood. The hero us usually a hard bitten detective, this gives mystery to his character too, the audience wants to find out what has made him act like that and what has gone wrong in his life. The detective will also realize  that he is being manipulated just in time and stop her plans, this is known as the spider and the fly.

Iconography

There isn't a wide range of props used in film noir. The first is guns, there is a large presence of guns in film noir, this is because of the time film noir was made. Film noir was made in the times when people didn't have much money this meant that there was a large amount of violent crime. Cigarettes were also used a lot in film noir, they also reflect the times in which the films were made. Cigarettes were fashionable and people thought that the people that smoked them on the big screens were rough around the edges. There are also a lot of blinds used, this may sound weird at first but what i mean by this is blinds that fit over windows. The blinds helps create the lighting that was talked about earlier by blocking a large amount of the light that comes into the rooms.Trilby's are also worn by the detective and other male characters a large amount in film noir, this is to hide their faces and create added mystery to the characters. The male characters also wore large cotes, this made them look larger and more powerful but at the same time made it look like they were hiding something. The gloves were also wore by a lot of the characters this showed distrust in one another, even when they shake hand they don't touch each other meaning there is no evidence that the have been together.

Use of the Camera

There are a lot of close shots to show peoples expressions and avoid letting people see the backgrounds, this is because the studios that made the films usually had little money and couldn't afford big backdrops and props. There is also a large amount of smoke used to hide the background, this is created by using dry ice, this was also used to try and distract people from the backdrop the shots.

Prelimianry task evaluation

What we have done: In our preliminary task we had to film a short sequence to a video and what happened in the video is that a bomb threat was called out then obviously at the end the bomb exploded and the main character could do nothing about it. The task was to introduce us students to editing and learning skills as we go such as being introduced to the 180 degree rule, which is pretending we have an imaginary line when filming shots and we can’t exceed past the line otherwise it causes confusion. We also inserted how to add music, effects, sound and texts to our videos.

Good points: Good points in our task are that we managed to get some understandings of shot reverse shot in our video, which was effective. Also we managed to add sound effects, an explosion and title texts and music in our film and the music set a mood to our task which worked well and all of these aspects made our overall presentation better and worked well in the video.

Bad points: A negative aspect in our task is that we maybe could have added more v. close up shots to show facial expression from both the characters because this would have held an effect and may have created tension due to the facial expressions. Also we could have added some credits at the end of the film just to signify who we are and it would have made the overall presentation neater.

Overall conclusion: Overall I felt this task was a success for many reasons, firstly I learnt new skills and techniques to my editing, such as learning the use of shot reverse shot, establishing shots, the 180 degree rule etc. Also the task has helped me with memorisation of lines and important roles amongst filming and it has given both me and George confidence for when we film our proper AS Media films. I would recommend the task for other students who are in the same position as me.

Feedback 1

You are using subject specific terminology and show that you have understood how to de-construct a media text.

Present the analysis with care and check grammar and punctuation as one analysis is almost a stream of consciousness.

Publish the other tasks that have been requested. The first analysis is the strongest which shows your potential so I am looking forward to seeing the others.

Use images to help present the posts effectively.

Se7en opening sequence analasis

Se7en
The opening scene starts with a book being opened; the shot of the book is a close up shot with the hands opening it out of focus. This immediately gives the impression something is wrong due to the fact that we can't tell whose hands they are. At the same time that this happens erratic music starts playing also symbolising something is wrong. The names that appear on the screen are jumpy and appear to move very suddenly. The next shot is of two hands, the hands seem to be deformed and hand drawn giving the impression of some kind of experiment. The scenes move fast, this give the impression of panic. The next shot is of somebody's fingers and a razorblade taking the skin off, this gives us the impression that he is not sane and that he is going to do something that would need him not to leave fingerprints. The shots then begin to move quickly from one to the next increasing the feeling of panic. There are a lot of extreme close ups giving the impression of concentration and a lot of camera angles making the viewer feel like it is hard to follow and there is no real pattern also liking back to insanity. There is then a shot of him writing, this shows that he is documenting and again gives off the impression that this is a kind of experiment. The hand and pen seem to be blurred and you can see double this shows that he isn't seeing things in the way that a normal person does. There are then a couple of red shots this lets the viewer know that he is dangerous and that there may be death involved. There is then a shot of a page turning and a shadow of his hand behind the page, this shows that he hides in the shadows; the lighting is also quite dark making the viewer think that he is dangerous. The music then begins to dim and loud scraping noises begin this shows that he is working on something. He then colours in a picture of a face black this shows that he doesn't like them, there are then a few red shots foreshadowing him killing them. There is then a shot where you can see his thumb putting something down, de does this neatly and carefully this signifies that he is relaxed and that this means a lot to him. His thumb is also dirty showing that he doesn't think much of himself. There is then a shot of a person with a metal rod stuck in the back of his head, this shows that he is planning on hurting someone and is learning how. There is a shot of him moving photos around carefully this shows that he is in control, at the same time the screen begins to distort with lines going across the screen this shows his mind is clouded. There is then a shot of him removing the word god from a dollar bill, this shows that he doesn't want god to be part of money. It also shows that he has no need for money and this reiterates the insanity. There are suddenly a lot of fast cuts then a cityscape showing that he is living among a peaceful city.

Mission Impossible opening sequence analasis

Mission Impossible
The first shot that is seen in the opening scene is an establishing shot. The shot is an aerial shot of the Grand Canyon and is designed to give the viewer a sense of where the film is set. There is also non-diegetic sound of wind rushing through the canyon this gives the impression that there are not many people around and that this is a hostile environment.
There is then a zooming shot of the main character on the side of the canyon, he looks calm and in control. There is then the slow introduction of non-diegetic music showing that this character is important. There are then a couple of aerial shots showing the character climbing the side of the canyon and some diegetic sound of him breathing.
The character then stops climbing and locks his leg in a gap and leaning back, this shows he is not afraid is confident in what he is doing. There is then a non-diegetic eagle noise signifying how high up the character is and showing that he is in America due to the fact that the national animal of America is the eagle.
There is a close up shot of the characters hand griping a rock covered in powder, the powder is used to grip this shows that the character knows what he is doing and is confident in doing it. The music also gets louder and more is added to it, it is at this point that it becomes contrapuntal because it sounds like holiday music and this contradicts the danger of the situation that he is in.
The camera then zooms out showing how small the character is in comparison to the environment. Then goes to a point of view shot that is in the middle of a shot reverse shot to show how high the character is and his reaction to seeing it.
The character then jumps from the ledge that he was on to the ledge opposite. The non-diegetic sound of music then gets reverted back to just its beat to show the danger of the situation and create tension. The shot is also slowed down to heighten the tension and the sped back up to relieve it. The character then slips and the shots move quickly between each other to try and show the heightened danger.
The character then grips on with one hand as the shot goes from a close up of his face to a mid shot. The music the returns to normal as the character swings around and grips with the other hand. The position that the character then finds him in compares him to Jesus. The fact that the character is compared to Jesus then shows that he is important and that he will be the character that saves the world or completes the mission.
There’s then a close up of the characters face to appeal to the female audience, this is because the movie is mostly action and this doesn’t appeal to the large female demographic so adding an attractive actor makes more females likely to see the film.
There is then a panning shot that goes all the way round the character to show how high the character has climbed. This turns into an areal shot that circles the character and towards the end there is diegetic sound of a helicopter.

The character then sees the helicopter with a point of view shot and as it turns sideways it reveals a man in a black suit, this is commonly used to portray a secret agent. The secret agent then fires a missile this increases the tension. The character then smiles and approaches the missile making the tension fade. The missile opens revealing sunglasses.
As the character puts them on there is a close up of his face. This then goes into a point of view shot as a typical British accent begins talking. The sunglasses show that the character is cool and calm. When the British person stops talking the sunglasses say they will explode in five seconds. The character calmly takes them off and throws them, as they explode they turn into a CGI intro screen with the mission impossible music playing behind.
